Grocery Shopping? What Food 'Sell-By' Dates Really Mean
Most states require food manufacturers to mark perishable foods with a date so customers can gauge product freshness -- but since there are no federal regulations requiring products to be dated, there isn't a uniform system.
Here is a guide to the most common terms and what they really mean...
"Sell-by" dates let stores know how long products can remain on the shelves. They also are used as guides for rotating stock. The sell-by date takes into consideration the length of time a product typically sits on the shelf at home after purchase. Perishable foods remain good for a period of time after the sell-by dates, assuming they have been stored properly.

Are Plant Sterols and Stanols on Your Dinner Menu?
You have certainly eaten cholesterol-lowering foods like walnuts, salmon, and oatmeal. But how about plant sterols and stanols? Do you bake them, broil them or eat them raw?

Are You Drinking Dangerous Levels of Fluoride?
A recent study by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) reveals that high levels of fluoride in drinking water can cause tooth weakness and discoloration as well as bone damage (even fractures). The findings suggest that millions of Americans may be at risk.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), anything over 4 mg per liter is dangerous. Yet, the NAS results indicate that fluoride-related problems begin at a level of just 2 mg per liter.
While there is scant and questionable evidence that fluoride applied topically can benefit your teeth, there is absolutely NO evidence that ingesting this poison has any benefit. It's kind of like drinking sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Check your local water district report for added fluoride and the % added. If the fluoride is above 2%, avoid it as drinking water. Instead choose spring water or water that has been filtered to remove the fluoride.
Make Sure Your Eggs Are From Chickens Not Cooped Up in Cages
A number of colleges and universities, along with many businesses, have reduced or eliminated their use of eggs from caged hens.
Stacked Two Stories High
Yale, Tufts, Dartmouth, Vassar, the University of Wisconsin, and 80 more schools have made the switch in response to a campaign by the Humane Society of the United States. Caged hens live in battery cages, which can be stacked up to two stories high, with about six hens per cage.
This gives each hen the space of about 3/4 the size of a sheet of notebook paper.
Increasing Sales
The industry argues that this is still a humane system, because conveyer belts remove manure twice a day, and fans keep the air fresh.
Cage-free hens require four to six times the space, making their eggs more expensive. Even so, sales of cage-free eggs are increasing by as much as 10 percent to 20 percent a year. Other specialty eggs, such as organic eggs or eggs high in omega-3 fatty acids, are also undergoing rapidly increasing sales.
Editor's Notes:
Organic, cage-free eggs are an incredible source of high-quality nutrients that many of us are deficient in, especially high-quality protein and healthy fat. Although they may be a bit pricier than typical commercial eggs, the extra price is well worth it for the benefits they will bring to your health.
Quality test: Just look at the yolks. You are getting really healthy eggs if the yolks are bright orange yellow. If they are pale yellow, better keep looking.
Buy locally direct if you can: If you cannot find a farmer to sell you eggs directly, then organic eggs from the store would be your next best option. Still, it's best to purchase directly from the farmer. Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Wild Oats and Henry’s are reputable retail stores for those of you living in areas where the farms have been replaced by shopping centers and condominiums.
Preparing your eggs: You can safely eat eggs raw by adding them to a protein shake. When cooking eggs, remember the less you cook them the better, and that scrambled eggs are the absolute worst way to eat eggs. Valuable nutrients, like lutein and other powerful antioxidants, are destroyed when they are exposed to high temperatures. |

The scientists divided mice into 3 groups. One group was fed a diet with no zinc, the second a diet with a "normal" or control amount, and the third was given a zinc supplement. By the end of the study, the mice given the zinc supplement had ...Read Entire Article
