The Recommended Dosage is Outdated

The daily recommended dosage (RDA) of Vitamin D is set at 400 IU (international units). This level of Vitamin D is considered by many experts to be the absolute minimum the body needs in order to avoid catastrophic health problems.

Several studies have shown that depending on your age, diet and where you live, 2000 – 4000 IU of Vitamin D are necessary.  Additionally, for some, up to 10,000 IU may be needed to restore their bodies to acceptable levels. This may seem like a lot, however, consider the fact that your body naturally produces about 10,000 IU of Vitamin D3 during 30 minutes of moderate exposure to the sun.

Researchers Call for Higher Doses

In an editorial in the March 2007 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a prominent group of researchers wrote, "The balance of the evidence leads to the conclusion that the public health is best served by a recommendation of higher daily intakes of Vitamin D. Relatively simple and low-cost changes, such as increased food fortification or increasing the amount of Vitamin D in vitamin supplement products may very well bring about rapid and important reductions in the morbidity associated with low Vitamin D status."1

A lecture in Houston presented by Dr. Abbas Qutab in September, 2007 stated, "The overall general recommendation for Vitamin D supplementation should be 4000 IU/day."2

This is over 10 times the amount previously considered adequate by the FDA.  Based on so much compelling evidence some expect the 400 IU daily standard will be revised.
